Led by multi-instrumentalist and singer Joey Quinoñez—who was fully responsible for the sound on the first three albums by Trish Toledo, the female vocalist who sparked the new-generation Chicano soul movement—The Cynthias are a nine-piece group that also features Brian and Andrea from The Altons on vocals and backing vocals! Just like their previous release, the meticulously crafted vocals and sound—ranging from catchy mellow soul and understated R&B numbers to lowrider oldies—are simply breathtaking. The Japanese booklet includes translations of the meaningful lyrics—which touch on various stages and outcomes of love—as well as an interview with the group’s central figure, Joey. The robust performances, which go beyond mere sweetness, are also a major draw. It’s a wonderful release.
