Bay Area-based artist Chaz Bear’s project, Toro y Mowa, has completed its new album. “Whole Earth,” their unexpected and bold eighth album that takes on rap-rock, SoundCloud rap, and Y2K emo head-on, is now out. ● Guests: Don Triver, Kevin Abstract, Rev, Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service) ChazBear’s eighth full-length studio album as ToroyMoi, *HoleErth*, is his most unexpected and daring work to date as a genre-shapeshifter, in which Bear takes on rap-rock, SoundCloud rap, and Y2K emo head-on. The album fuses two genres—anthemic pop-punk and melancholic, Auto-Tuned rap—that influence each other more than ever before, and features the most guest appearances in ToroyMoi’s discography. On the anti-love song “Madonna,” Don Toliver delivers a moody vocal performance. On “Heaven,” Kevin Abstract and Lev showcase their perfectly synchronized reflections. Emo king Benjamin Gibbard also joins in, embodying the pulse of millennial indie. Recorded over a few months from late 2023 to early 2024, *HoleErth* came together naturally during that brief period simply by Bear reaching out to his longtime friends. The sum of the parts on *HoleErth* is immense, particularly showcasing Bear’s skill as a producer within the hip-hop genre. His role within that culture has long been solidified by past collaborations with some of rap’s greatest pioneers. While this marked a bold shift in direction for Bear, it was not a difficult one. As a result, Bear has opened up new sonic horizons for ToroyMoi’s work while embracing the electronic roots of this project. (1/2)
