Otsuka Yuji

Description:

This is the second Rio recording by Yuji Otsuka, a percussionist who loves Brazilian music. The splendidly finished album features samba, MPB, and Japanese standards performed by a splendid lineup of musicians. This is a confident work that can be listened to by not only Brazilian music fans but also by a wide range of people. Yuji Otsuka was captivated by the sound of bossa nova in its early days. Later, he became interested in Brazilian music in general and began playing Brazilian percussion himself. His passion for music continues even now that he is the president of a leading company, and he says that he never neglects to practice percussion. In 2016, he achieved his dream of recording in Rio. In 2024, eight years after the Corona disaster, when the Brazilian music scene had regained its vitality, he took the opportunity to make a second recording in Rio. The local musicians who participated in the project were Claudio Jorge, a guitarist who had worked with Martiño da Vila for many years and knew samba inside and out; Thais Motta, an attractive singer who is indispensable to the Rio music scene; and Marcel Powell, the second son of Baden Powell and a guitarist, Mariana Leporace, singer and sister-in-law of Sergio Mendes, and other distinguished members. Produced by Kazuo Yoshida, leader of the pioneering Japanese bossa group Spic & Span, who is currently active in producing Brazilian music as well as his own band, TOQUIO BOSSA TRIO (TOQUIO BOSSA TRIO) and PANDRUM (PANDRUM). The band reproduces the style of samba, or pagode, performed around the cuica, a percussion instrument unique to Brazil, which is Yuji Otsuka's specialty. The album also features "I want to go back to that day" sung in Portuguese by Thais Motta, "Farewell Samba" with guitarist Marcel Powell, and selections from the repertoire of contemporary divas Marisa Monchi and Hoberta Saa. This is a moving work filled with even more passionate love for Brazil than its predecessor, "Mais Qui Amizade" (More Than Friendship).
