Description:
A Study in Returning to the Roots of PerformanceRiccardo Chailly has achieved great things with this world's oldest orchestra since becoming Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 2005, when Chailly was appointed Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Over a 16-year period from 1989 to 2004, Chailly completed a recording of the complete Mahler symphonies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, of which he was then music director. The start of this complete video collection was the "Leipzig International Mahler Festival" held at the Gewandhaus from May 17-29, 2011, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mahler's death. At this festival, each orchestra and conductor performed Mahler's symphonies separately, with Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra playing the role of host, performing No. 2 at the opening concert and No. 8 at the closing concert, and the live video became the first installment of the complete collection project. After that, he recorded No. 4 and No. 6 at the rate of two works per year, and this No. 5 was recorded in February 2013. As mentioned above, Schee has recorded all of Mahler's symphonies with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and since the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Gewandhaus Orchestra of course have different sounds, Schee himself was very conscious of the differences from the previous recordings. Schee studied intensely the score by Walter Mengelberg, a historical conductor well versed in Mahler's playing, and he made the tempo setting clearer and more faithful to the score, and he also examined the treatment of rests very seriously, saying that "the length of rests defines the temperature of the tension. As with Mahler, Chailly has re-recorded Brahms's symphonies with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and here he uses the same tempo interpretations. The video product is also highly appealing, and the excellent editing, which is only possible with "ACCENTUSMUSIC," makes for a spectacular video experience. The jacket design is by Neo Rauch, a contemporary artist from Leipzig who has been used throughout the series.
