David Geringas, a Lithuanian cellist who studied with Rostropovich and won the first prize at the 1970 International Tchaikovsky Competition, is now performing a collection of works from his native Lithuania. As a cellist, Geringas boasts a wide repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music, and as a conductor, he has served as principal guest conductor of the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra. In the past, Dreyer Gaido has featured Lithuanian music by Senderovas, Balsis, Barkauskas, and others, and now "The Sound of Lithuania" is a collection of cello works by a whopping 14 Lithuanian composers. CD1, a collection of prewar works, and CD2, a collection of works from the postwar period through the 1980s, provide a bird's-eye view of contemporary Lithuanian cello music. Geringas eloquently describes the appeal of the cello in a variety of styles, from romantic melodies to dynamic phrases and narrative works, all performed on his beloved Guadagnini 1761.Lithuanian fans and cello people should pay attention!
