The first live recording of the Saint-Saens concerto by the master Freire in 1986 and the Grieg & Liszt broadcasts recorded in Germany in his 20's are now available on CD! Born in Boa Esperanza, Brazil in 1944, Freire is a prodigy who gave a recital at the age of four. In 1957 he won the first prize at the International Competition in Rio de Janeiro, and later studied in Vienna, receiving the Vianna da Motta Prize in Lisbon and the Dinu Lipatti Medal in London in 1964, In 2017, half a century later, he is still at the forefront as one of the world's leading pianists. Saint-Saëns is Freire's favorite composer.Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto No. 2, which he performed with Adam Fischer and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1986, offers a performance of great scale backed by Freire's overwhelming technique. In the first movement, which begins with a solo piano performance, Freire delivers a powerful yet sad melody with full emotion. In the second movement, the crisp piano and orchestra engage in a wonderful dialogue. In the third movement, the Presto, Freire's superb technique can be fully appreciated in this outstanding performance! The Grieg and Liszt piano works are memorable broadcast recordings that made their Berlin radio debut in June 1966. Although Freire was only 22 years old at the time, he had already established his own unique style, and his glossy and expressive playing captivates the listener.
