Description:

The exquisite "Silence" created by a superb percussionist. Christoph Sitzen is a member of the Wave Quartet, a group of talented marimba players. He studied percussion with Martin Grubinger and at the Bruckner University of Music Linz with Bokdan Bakanu and Leonhard Schmiedinger. In 2006, she won third prize at the Linz International Marimba Competition at the age of 13, and in 2014, she won third prize in the percussion category at the world-renowned Munich International Music Competition. Since 2017, in addition to his solo performances with various orchestras, he has been challenging all the possibilities of percussion as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In this, his second solo album for Sony Classical, he explores the "silence" of Bach, Albeniz, Piazzolla, Glass, Talega, and Pärt in a program of fascinating works. The marimba performances of "Asturias" and "Memories of the Alhambra" for guitar convey something tangible and immediate, and the alternating combination of movements from Bach's "Lute Suite" adds a contrasting charm. Piazzolla's piece, on the other hand, creates a catchy sound world, and Pärt's "Mirror in the Mirror" is duo with Clemens Hagen's cello, creating a different beauty than the original. In the final piece, Bach's "Concerto for Harpsichord" with two marimbas and a string ensemble, including Sitzen's teacher Bogdan Bacanu, the ornate melody seems to swing in two directions like a pendulum. The result is "a work of great technique, relentless power, tremendous sensitivity, breathtaking speed, singular presence, and profound musicality" (Pizzicato Magazine), "seduced by the marimba's status and the intense yet "fragile" sound it emits" (New York Times), and "a young percussionist's wonderful exploration of the heart of music" (The New York Times). The album is a convincing confirmation that the praise for the young percussionist's wonderful inquisitiveness" (Grammophone) is spot on. Sony Music
