Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Description:

Fresto transcends time with his newly created clarinet! World premiere recording of the Clarinet Concerto with Vivaldi's most beautiful opera arias! Martin Frest, the "magician of the clarinet", presents a new album of Vivaldi's Clarinet Concerto! Why? There were no clarinets in Vivaldi's time. When asked about this second Sony Classical album (third if you count Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of the World"), Fresto answers: "It is a unique symbiosis of the old and the new, a clarinet concerto that takes the repertoire in an unexpected direction. "It is a unique symbiosis of the old and the new, and a major step in an unexpected direction for the clarinet concerto repertoire. My goal as a musician is not only to play established repertoire, but to re-create it. As Andreas N. Tulcman demonstrates in this album, he has selected ten beautiful arias from Vivaldi's operas and oratorios, arranged each one for clarinet, and assembled three concertos, each one as a movement of a clarinet concerto. The result is an unconventional approach. Tulkman is a composer and arranger born in Hanover in 1956.The orchestra has already made a name for itself with arrangements of Wagner, Mozart, Prokofiev, Bizet, and Schubert, and its excellent arranging sense has been much talked about. The "chalumeau," the predecessor of the clarinet in Vivaldi's time, was an instrument with a very simple system compared to today's, and Vivaldi and Telemann wrote concertos for it. For this recording, Fröst commissioned the famous clarinet maker "Buffet Crampon" to make a new clarinet made of "boxwood," which was the usual material used for the chalumeau at that time. Modern clarinets are mainly made of ebony, which is very hard, but by using boxwood, which is soft and light, a special instrument was born that is very soft and suitable for reproducing Vivaldi's music, and yet has a completely different sound to let you hear the essence of Vivaldi's music. The back-up is a period instrument. Backed by period instruments, the Concerto Cologne explores to revive the sound of the time when the music was composed by using period research and technique, and by devising articulations. The performance is known for its creativity and vibrancy, creating a wonderful symbiosis of old and new with Fresto's Chalumeau's mellow-toned clarinet and Vivaldi's beautiful arias.
