Description:

Guitarist Davey Mooney releases his long-awaited new record with his highly trusted drummer Wataru Omura! Mooney is a jazz guitarist from New Orleans, where he directs the jazz studies and jazz guitar programs at the University of North Texas, where he teaches jazz improvisation. After releasing his first album on the Sunny Side label over a decade ago, Mooney turned his attention to Japan to broaden his musical horizons, and a friend suggested he join Omura on tour. The two quickly formed a strong bond from that performance, and they performed together many times, leading to the 2018 recording Benign Strangers. Their tour in Japan that year was a great success, and their musical development, not to mention their name recognition in Japan, has been very remarkable. A pandemic put the duo on hiatus, but they never lost their passion for music and released a new record, The Word. Mooney's music is often dark and highly improvisational, while Omura's work, by contrast, is warm and free, drawing much of its inspiration from Indian music and tabla studies. Both are extremely skillful melodists with the ability to draw the listener in. The two are truly two of the strongest musicians in the world, and when they play together, they create the perfect music that they both idealize. Mooney and Omura have reunited the musicians who performed together on "Benign Strangers. Woodwind virtuoso John Ellis plays saxophone and clarinet on this album, and pianist Glenn Zales plays bass and drums. Pianist Glenn Zalesky and bassist Matt Clohessy play a varied program to perfection! Members:Davy Mooney- guitar John Ellis- tenor & soprano saxophones 5, 9; bass clarinet 5, 7, 8 Matt Clohesy- bass Glenn ZaleskiLENN-piano Ko Omura- drums; tabla 7, 9 Recorded at the Big Orange Sheep, Brooklyn, NY, June 20-21, 2024
