The Benevits Quartet, winners of the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa, recorded works by Czech composers active in the first half of the 20th century. The disc focuses on Czech (Czechoslovakia) composers active during World War II in the early to mid 20th century, and includes works by Viktor Ullmann, Hans Krasa, Erwin Schulhof, and Pavel Haas. Victor Ullmann was born to Jewish parents. Although he had converted to Catholicism before his death, he was sent to the Terezin camp in 1942 after Nazi Germany invaded Prague. The String Quartet No. 3 was composed at the camp. From Monkey Mountain," written by Pavel Haas at the age of 26, recalls a summer holiday he spent in the Czech-Moravian highlands. The music is completely Haasian in substance, with a melodic charm reminiscent of his teacher and an emphasis on the jazz improvisational dictum that characterizes the work. The Benewitz Quartet, which performs the piece, was formed in 1998 at the Prague Conservatory. They studied with R. Schmidt at the Queen Sofia University of Music, and in 2004 received the Czech Chamber Music Society Prize from the Czech Philharmonic.In the same year, he was a finalist at the ARD Munich International Competition, where he won the Theodore Rögler Foundation Scholarship and the Bärenreiter Original Version Award. 2005, he won the 5th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa, and in 2008, he won the 8th Paolo Borciani International In 2008, he won the first prize at the 8th Paolo Borciani International Quartet Competition in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
