Peter Ungean, former first violinist of the Tokyo Quartet, has been a highly skilled orchestral builder since his transition to conducting, including the revival of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Canada. His full-fledged debut recording with the prestigious Scottish Royal Scottish National Orchestra, which welcomed him as its chief conductor in 2012, succeeding Stéphane Denève, is by John Adams (1947-), a leading figure of post-minimalism! Harmonielere" is one of Adams' most famous works of the '80s, taking its title from Schoenberg's 1911 book.Echoes of Mahler, Wagner, Strauss, Sibelius, Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky, interspersed by Adams' hand, emerge from the approximately 40-minute performance time and score. The "Doctor Atomic Symphony," based on the opera "Doctor Atomic," was transformed into another work and premiered in 2007. The "Doctor Atomic Symphony" consists of three parts: "Laboratory," "Panic," and "Trinity," and depicts Dr. Robert Oppenheimer's anguish, conflict, and fear. In the opera version, the trumpet solo sung at the end of the first act plays an aria from a sonnet by John Dunn, a 16th- and 17th-century English poet.This new recording by Peter Oundjian and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra provides a rare opportunity to confront the "music" of John Adams without words, direction, or stage sets.
