Pianist Christian Zimmermann commemorates the 140th anniversary of the birth of fellow composer Szymanowski with a new work Following last year's Beethoven project, Zimmermann returns to his roots in his native Poland to perform piano music by Karol Szymanowski, whose 140th birthday is this year. This recording was made in June 2022 at the Fukuyama Arts and Culture Hall in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, designed by Zimmermann's friend Yasuhisa Toyoda. Also included for the first time is a recording of "The Masque," originally made in 1994 but never released before. Zimmermann aims to position Szymanowski as a great composer of piano music through repertoire that represents the essence of Szymanowski's music. About SzymanowskiSzymanowski was born in 1882 in Timoszówka (now Ukraine), spent most of his childhood in Warsaw, and was something of an outsider in the Polish music world of his time. After traveling to Vienna, southern Europe, North Africa, and the United States, he returned to independent Poland and devoted himself to establishing his country's musical identity. After serving as director of the Warsaw Conservatory of Music and as dean of the Conservatory, he went on tour as a pianist, but his health failed and he died in 1937 at the age of only 54.His music was more highly regarded outside Poland during his lifetime, but the situation has since reversed, influencing post-Wagnerian Romanticism, Orientalism inspired by Middle Eastern art and poetry, works by Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, Stravinsky, and, of course, the mazurka. His music is born from a variety of influences, including traditional Polish styles, and has recently become rightly recognized within the country for its unique voice. Universal Music/IMS
