Miles Davis, an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer, is one of the most influential and highly regarded figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Throughout his career spanning nearly 50 years, he embraced a diverse range of musical approaches and remained at the forefront of the development of many major styles within jazz.
This album compiles recordings from 1956, when Davis recorded his most influential works for the Prestige label. Featuring tracks from *Cookin’*, *Relaxin’*, *Workin’*, and *Steamin’*, this release captures performances by the quintet comprising Davis, Coltrane, Garland, Chambers, and Jones. Furthermore, this album includes another Prestige session by the trumpeter, recorded on March 16 of the same year. This session features Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone), Tommy Flanagan (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Art Taylor (drums). It marked the bandleader’s final studio recording with Rollins and his only collaboration with Flanagan. The album includes two of Davis’s original compositions (“Vierd Blues” and “No Line”), as well as Dave Brubeck’s “In Your Own Sweet Way”; all of these tracks were originally included on the 1956 LP *Collectors’ Items*.
All audio was transferred from the original analog tapes, meticulously restored by Plangent Processes, and remastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Paul Blake-More. The release includes new liner notes by Grammy Award winners Ashley Kahn and Dan Morgenstern.
