A collection of 19th century German Romantic choral works by Rheinberger and Mendelssohn, conducted by Benjamin Goodson, who was appointed Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Choir, one of Europe's most prestigious broadcast choirs. Josef Rheinberger, a 19th century German composer from Liechtenstein, was a child prodigy who became an organist at the church in his hometown at the age of seven and was already composing. The Mass in E-flat major, Op. 109, "Cantus Mass," composed in 1878, was dedicated to the then newly installed Pope Leo XIII. Its double chorus form is reminiscent of Giovanni Gabrieli's double chorus style, and its stoic polyphonic style, in which the lyrics are easy to hear, is said to have been modeled after Palestrina. This is a Catholic Mass in the old style, a fusion of Venetian and Roman styles of the late Renaissance, but the beautiful romantic melodies that appear here and there are characteristic of Rheinberger. In particular, the sorrowful beauty of the Agnus Dei, which is the most Romantic style of the Mass, is breathtaking.In contrast, "Evening Song" is German-language church music in the Lutheran tradition, composed in the mid-teens. It is based on the theme of "The Way of Emmaus," and has become one of the most popular of Rheinberger's works. The two works in different styles illustrate Rheinberger's wide-ranging style.
