The Italian composer Wolf-Ferrari is famous for his beautiful interludes in the opera "The Jewel of the Madonna," a collection of chamber works by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, a rare melody maker, Savarisch, and members of the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra. He was born in Venice to a German painter father and an Italian aristocrat mother. Known as the "melody maker of the 20th century," Wolf-Ferrari excelled at operatic buffa-like comedies with glimpses of Mozart's influence, and was a great lover of his native Venice. This release is noteworthy not only for its rare and fascinating chamber works by Wolf-Ferrari, but also for its recording with Wolfgang Sawallisch, one of Germany's foremost master conductors and pianists, and members of the orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera, his army. It is well known that Sawallisch aspired to be a pianist, but he was very fond of playing chamber music with members of his own orchestra.In the liner notes, producer Werner Dubbelinghaus shares his recollections of the time, and to his surprise, Sawallisch participated in this recording free of charge. The Leopolders Quartet, composed of members of the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, was formed in 1976 and named after Wolfgang Leopolders, who had played as the first violin in the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra since the age of 18.
