Description:
*Adriana Lecouvreur* depicts the dramatic and glamorous life of a hugely popular 18th-century French actress who captivated an era with her beauty and acting talent while living a passionate love affair. Although it remains a key part of the repertoire for today’s superstar singers like Netrebko, the title role here is sung by the Italian soprano Magda Olivero (1910–2014), whom Cilea himself praised as “the real Adriana.” Although she was at the height of her career as a prodigious talent, she retired in 1942 upon her marriage. However, after being personally asked by Cilea to take on the role of Adriana, she made her full-fledged comeback in a 1951 performance. This recording dates from 1963, about ten years later. This commemorative album was produced in 2014 following Olivero’s passing. It is a rare recording featuring Olivero’s portrayal of Adriana, a role personally endorsed by Cilea himself.
