HELSINKI CHAMBER CHOIR

Description:

A heartwarming Finnish Christmas with the Helsinki Chamber Choir and organ, led by Schwekendiik, on SACD hybrid disc. The Helsinki Chamber Choir and Artistic Director Nils Švekendić, whose "Erik Berriman: Choral Works 1936-2000" (BIS 2252) has been well received, present a new and highly anticipated recording of Finnish Christmas music! The new album is titled "From "High in the sky I come" to "Christmas Eve"" and features Finland's oldest collection of European chants "Pie Kantziones" and "Christmas Songs" by Finnish composers, as well as Bach's Organ Chorale Preludes, Berlioz and Tchaikovsky's "Christmas Songs of Finland" and "Christmas Eve" by Finnish composers. The "Finnish Christmas Music Feast" will also include Bach's organ chorale preludes, and choral works by Berlioz and Tchaikovsky. The program begins with the chorale prelude "There is a Voice Calling Us to Awake" and ends with "This World is Lullaby", a Finnish hymn (No. 30) based on a Silesian folk song with Finnish lyrics. The "Son is born in Bethlehem" and "From on high, I come" are sung in a style similar to a "medley" with verses from the version in "Pie Canziones," versions by German and Danish composers (Buxtehude), and verses from the "Chorale prelude. The first and second tracks of "Pie Canziones" and "Carminaria" (JS51a), which Sibelius composed for three mixed voices in 1898, are also sung in the same style. The Helsinki Chamber Choir is an ensemble founded in 1962. Nils Schwekendijk, born in Germany, studied at Clare College, Cambridge, Freiburg and Helsinki, and is a professor at the Sibelius Academy of the Helsinki University of the Arts, has served as artistic director since 2007. The works with organ, the Chorale Preludes and "Pastorale," were performed with Jan Lehetra, who teaches at the Sibelius Academy, at the organ. King International
