The leader's album was released in 2009 on Smalls Records, and features 13 songs by Michael Kanan, a piano/guitar/bass player based in NYC who studied under Sheila Jordan, and Irving Berlin, a drumless swinging piano/guitar/bass player who studied under Yaala Ballin. The backing members also play on this album. Israeli-born vocalist Yara Berlin, who has been based in New York since 2004, sings the songs of the great composer Irving Berlin on this latest release. Yara studied with Sheila Jordan and released her first album on Smalls Records in 2009, and was featured on the SteepleChase album "Music of Duke Jordan" by Chris Byars, the lead player on that album. Duke Jordan", a leader of the SteepleChase, Chris Byars, who was also a member of the SteepleChase. This album is the first work by Byars in five years.These days, many artists release a work once a year, so five years is not a short time, but there is something pleasant about Irving Berlin's masterpieces, sung in a naturalistic manner, that incorporate authentic yet subtle deviations into the larger flow of the music. Backed by a trio of piano, guitar, and bass. The slow, drumless rhythms are a good match for her voice, as is the four-beat bass that forms the core of the opening "It's a Lovely Day," which has medium swing, slow ballad quality, and a pleasant manouche-swing arrangement on "Be Careful," "It's MyHeart," and "It's MyHeart. There are also numbers like "It's My Heart," and "Blue Skies," with its swingy lines and arco bass, and the free and easy singing of "Blue Skies.From the 90's, Michael Kanan, who released a leader album on Fresh Sound New Talent and accompanied Jane Monheit, Chris Flory, who also released a collaboration album with Scott Hamilton on the prestigious Arbors label, and AriRoland, who released a leader album on Smalls Records. This is a vocal work that also features the performances of the artisanal backing musicians.
