Mozart (1756-1791)

Description:

Clemens Hagen's Haydn "Cello Concerto No. 1" with an ambitious cadenza! Clemens Hagen, a founding member of the Hagen Quartet and one of the leading cellists of our time, has finally recorded Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1. The work is said to have been written for the cellists of the Esterházy family court orchestra, of which Haydn was the music director, and became known in 1961 when it was discovered in the collection of the National Museum in Prague. Today, the bright, open music and the gorgeous technique of the cello can be enjoyed, and it has become an important part of the cellist's repertoire. Clemens Hagen uses a cadenza by the contemporary Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud in this recording. The large gap between Haydn's music, which also shows traces of the Baroque period, and contemporary music is striking. The performance features vivid bowing of dispersed chords, dazzlingly gorgeous technique, and the deep sympathy for Haydn that he cultivated as a member of the Quartet. The coupling includes Mozart's Concerto Symphony for Violin and Viola.Performed by violinist Jan Bjøranger, music director of the 1B1 Chamber Orchestra, and Lars Anels Thomtel, Norway's leading viola player. The two virtuosos cross swords with the orchestra in this concerto. The orchestra is understated but has the stability to support the whole, and the dialogue between the solo violin and viola is more pronounced. Stavanger's string ensemble 1B1 is a modern instrument ensemble based at Bjergsted 1. It was founded when Stavanger was named "European Capital of Culture" in 2008, and includes musicians who teach at the University of Stavanger and its best students, as well as members of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
