There are already so many renowned recordings of Schubert’s masterpiece “The Miller’s Daughter” that listeners are often spoiled for choice—but now we’re adding yet another one to the mix. Gilchrist, who delivers a magnificent performance here, is a British tenor born in 1970. He initially studied pharmacy with the intention of becoming a doctor while singing in the choir at King’s College, Cambridge, but in 1996 he made a complete transition to a career in music. Since then, he has been active in a wide range of roles, serving as a soloist with choirs and performing in concerts. He has performed with major British orchestras, including the English Chamber Orchestra, and has earned high acclaim. Schubert’s “The Miller” is also part of his signature repertoire; he has toured throughout the UK with pianist Anna Tilbrock, receiving rave reviews at every concert. His charm lies in his delicate, refined vocal quality, and this is a superb performance that fully captures the “single-minded devotion of a young man” demanded by this song cycle. His rich, sweet high notes, in particular, are uniquely his own. One cannot help but be moved by his emotionally rich singing, which maintains a sense of tension throughout all 20 songs. Naxos Japan
