Code9—the head of Hyperdub and a key figure who has consistently pushed the boundaries of electronic music—has finally released his first album in seven years. Kode9 is a key figure who, as the head of Hyperdub—a label that has consistently released cutting-edge electronic and bass music, led by the one-of-a-kind Burial—continues to pursue a wide range of activities as an artist, DJ, and writer. He has released his long-awaited new album, *Escapology*, his first in seven years since 2015’s *Nothing*. *Escapology*, arguably the most ambitious work in Kode9’s discography to date, is positioned as the soundtrack to the sonic fiction *Astro-Darien*, set to be released in October by *Hyperdub*’s sub-label, *Flatlines*, and captures the tense atmosphere of *Astro-Darien* through high-resolution soundscapes and asymmetrical rhythms. This work began as an audio-visual installation presented over two weeks in 2021 on the main floor of “Corsica Studios,” a venue in South London. It was also invited to INA-ARM, a Paris-based research institute dedicated to electronic music founded in 1951 by Pierre Henri and others, and was recorded using the Acousmonium—a sound system created in 1974 by the great French electronic music composer François Bayle. A futuristic yet primitive masterpiece has been born, blending various elements such as bass music, electronic music, and musique concrète! The artwork was created by Lawrence Lek and Optigram, longtime collaborators of Kode9.
