It also includes Ozawa’s breathtaking performance of the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s *Serenade for Strings* from his comeback concert in 2010 following his illness. The Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2011. To mark this occasion, video recordings of concerts from 1992 to 2010 will be released. It is also fascinating to observe the evolution of both Ozawa’s conducting and the orchestra’s lineup. It is clear that neither has become complacent with their annual level of performance. Furthermore, while many of these performances have been released on CD, the recordings often fail to fully convey their brilliance, so I have high hopes for the DVD and Blu-ray releases. The passionate performance of Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1” and Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings” from the first concert—among other pieces—conveys a palpable determination to make the concert a success. In the Brahms piece, the performance of Fars—who long served as the face of the orchestra as the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s principal timpanist—is particularly striking (notably in the additional timpani parts at the beginning of the first movement and in the chorale at the end of the fourth movement). In the Serenade, the rich, full sound of the string section was impressive. Mozart’s Divertimento—a work that could be called the orchestra’s early signature piece—was performed with great affection. Ozawa’s attachment to these works is evident from the fact that he conducted these two pieces upon his return from illness in 2010. As for Beethoven, in Symphony No. 7, Ozawa’s unrestrained, frenzied energy was transmitted to the orchestra, resulting in a magnificent performance that charged forward like a blazing fire. The woodwind section shines with the presence of the Berlin Philharmonic’s virtuosos—Koch on oboe and Leister on clarinet—along with Shigenori Kudo on flute. Leister and double bassist Zeperitz also appear on works other than Symphony No. 7. You can enjoy Beethoven performances that showcase Ozawa’s dynamic energy. In the Bruckner, the beauty of the Adagio and the power of the climax are deeply moving. The beautiful tone of Radek Baborák on the horn can be heard throughout. Ozawa’s music has gained depth and richness, resulting in a more polished and well-rounded sound.
