Ayumi Tanaka, a pianist active in Scandinavia who made her ECM debut in 2021 with the album *Sveikaas Silence—Mizukiku—*, returns with her third album overall (and second on ECM)—her first in five years. Unlike her previous album, which featured her regular trio of Christian Meos Svensen (b) and Per Oddvar Johansen (ds), this album was recorded with a new trio consisting of American bassist Thomas Morgan and Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen. These three musicians, well-known to fans familiar with ECM’s musical sensibilities, weave together abstract and lyrical ideas to shape the music collectively within compositions that are imbued with flow and energy, drawing influence from chamber music, jazz, and Eastern, Western, and Nordic sensibilities. The title “Windflower” refers to the ephemeral anemone. In many cultures, it symbolizes the transience of beauty and suggests the need to capture and cherish the moment. This album features a free ballad style at its core, characterized by radiant music woven from eight improvisationally composed pieces and a free arrangement of Ayumi Tanaka’s composition “LaSource.” For Tanaka and her collaborators, the means of creation are secondary to the end. “I want to compose music that sounds like improvisation,” she says, adding, “And I want to improvise music that sounds as if it were written…”
