Description:
The French composer Ransino (Ransino, b. 1954) made his unique style known with that incredibly shocking *Requiem* (8.572771). This recording features his “Violin Concerto,” performed by the virtuoso Isabelle Faust, along with two works inspired by the renowned Roman poet Virgil. This enigmatic Violin Concerto—in which Rancino made full use of his technical skill and imagination to abstractly depict the various phenomena arising from the confrontation between an orchestra likened to a massive machine and a small wooden instrument (the violin)—is dedicated to its premiere performer, Isabelle Faust. The other work depicts the story of the Roman poet Virgil’s death. There are many anecdotes about this poet, and numerous stories have been born from them. Lansino attempted to adapt one of these anecdotes into an opera, but ultimately, that project never came to fruition. However, it is said that this inspired not only the four pieces on this album but also various orchestral and vocal works. This four-movement suite begins with a prelude featuring a fierce clash of sounds, followed by an interlude reminiscent of the twinkling of stars, then “The Death of Virgil” with vocal parts, and finally concludes with a postlude that seems to soothe the grief.
