Berlioz was sent to Paris by his father, a doctor, to study medicine, but he enrolled in the Conservatory to study composition. *The Penance of Faust*, which Berlioz termed a “dramatic narrative,” is based on Gérard de Nerva’s French translation of Goethe’s *Faust*. The plot revolves around the pact between Faust and Mephistopheles, the seduction of Marguerite, her imprisonment and redemption for the murder of her mother, and Faust’s descent into hell to suffer his punishment. All of these scenes are vividly brought to life through Berlioz’s masterful, dramatic orchestral writing. The work also includes the famous “Lakozzi March” and two frequently performed dance pieces, the “Minuet of the Will-o’-the-Wisps” and the “Dance of the Fairies.” Following the *Cantata Collection* (8555810) and *A Midsummer Night’s Dream* (8557274), this is the latest Berlioz recording featuring Kazadosh and the Lille National Orchestra, among others. Recorded live in Lille in November 2003, this performance is characterized by a focus on the work’s lyrical aspects.
