In 2024, the 150th anniversary of Holst's birth and the 90th anniversary of his death, two stereo recordings of "The Planets" made by Boldt on the old EMI label are newly digitized and mastered. This 1978 recording is a historical source that has become the standard for many "Planets" performances. It is not only the last recording of "The Planets" by Boult, the premiere performer, but also one of the most important EMI albums from the last period of analog recordings. A comparison with the 1966 recording released at the same time is also recommended. The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in Japan and mastered separately for this release on the SACD and CD layers. New commentary is included. This is one of the most famous masterpieces in the UK. It is rare to reissue the same piece at the same time, but on this occasion, we have decided to reissue both recordings at the same time, as they share many common elements, and thus, the conditions for reissuing them are the same. The two "Planets" recordings, especially the 1978 version, have been reissued many times even in the CD era, and both are available on SACD. As is well known, the fact that this is the last recording of the "Planets" by Boult, the premiere performer, adds greatly to the value of this recording. This and the 1966 recording were made at the same Kingsway Hall, and although the producer is different, the engineer is the same Christopher Parker. The 1978 version was recorded with Christopher Bishop, which is another interesting difference. The only other differences are the orchestra and the age of the recordings, so you may want to compare the recordings, including the subtle differences in Boult's interpretation.Of course, they are not necessarily under the same conditions, but we don't think there is any other example that comes so close in terms of simultaneous state-of-the-art digitization and mastering.
