[Frank and Francesco: Two Zappas Across the Ages, and a Collection of Works Inspired by Them] Frank Zappa, a Sicilian-American artist who was active from the 1960s until the very end of his life, left a wide-ranging legacy and influence spanning rock and contemporary music alike, while also taking a sharp critical stance on social issues. He felt a kinship with Francesco Zappa, an 18th-century composer from Milan whom he discovered by chance, and after performing the composer’s works on the Synclavier (an electronic instrument), he released the album *Francesco Zappa* in 1984. However, However, because the composer was virtually unknown at the time, Francesco Zappa himself was widely perceived as a fictional character created by Frank Zappa. According to current research, Francesco Zappa is believed to have been born around 1717 in the suburbs of Milan, and he reportedly described himself on the covers of his published sheet music as “Professor of Composition and Cello at the Academy of Milan.” In 1764, he left Italy, traveled through France and Germany, and settled in The Hague, Netherlands, where he served as a court musician for William V for 30 years. His style, characterized by beautiful melodies and a sense of splendor that epitomizes the Gallant style, might have been forgotten had it not been for its rediscovery by Frank Zappa in the 20th century. This album features a collaboration between the brilliant composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima and Vanni Moretto—a double bassist, violone player, composer, and conductor—along with the period instrument ensemble, Il Pomodoro to present two works by Zappa alongside their own compositions inspired by them. This program has already generated great excitement among audiences during live performances. Moretto’s “Zappa’s Revenge” is an arrangement of Frank Zappa’s works for an 18th-century ensemble—conceived as either a gesture of gratitude or retaliation for Frank Zappa’s performance of Francesco’s works on electronic instruments. Highlights include the use of gut-stringed instruments, a classical oboe, harpsichord, and—in a daring move—a natural horn for this tonally unconventional piece. While the contrast between modern and 18th-century sounds may seem strange at first, the sense that these sounds gradually converge offers a fresh experience, and the album delivers the energetic music characteristic of Sollima.
