[Six Unpublished String Quartets by the Master of Music? The Vivid Beauty of the Classical Era Performed on Period Instruments] This is the world premiere recording of a set of six string quartets that, although their authenticity remained unconfirmed, were included in Beethoven’s catalog of works in the latter half of the 20th century. However, they have rarely been performed and have received little attention. These works had long been kept in storage as unpublished manuscripts by the Viennese music publisher Artaria, known for its connection to Haydn. In 1901, the Royal Library of Berlin (now the National Library) acquired them at auction. Although they bore a handwritten note attributing them to “Mozart” by another hand, the validity of this claim was refuted in the first half of the 20th century, and the possibility emerged that the young Beethoven, during his time in Bonn, was the composer. This attribution has faced significant controversy, and it was not until 2010 that some of these works finally received their world premieres in Genoa, having never been performed before. Scholars have also suggested other potential composers, including the Romberg brothers who served at the Bonn court during the same period, Beethoven’s brother Kaspar, and the renowned Viennese composer Vanhal, but no definitive conclusion has been reached. With the exception of the sixth piece—a two-movement work ending with variations—all six are in three movements (the fourth, the only one in a minor key, includes an introduction). Their elegant sound, characterized by sonata form, is imbued with a remarkable sophistication likely born out of the string quartet boom of the 1790s. Regardless of who composed them, these six pieces are undoubtedly worth listening to.
