A masterpiece that marks a turning point in Handel's late oratorio career, Niquet's performance conveys a strong sense of unity. The Israelites in Egypt" was published in 1739, during the transition period when Handel gave up composing Italian-language operas in London and began to focus on writing English-language oratorios. Based on the Old Testament book of Exodus, the opera initially began with a lengthy "Part I" section depicting the Israelites mourning the death of Pharaoh's advisor Joseph, but this was merely a reprise of the music for the queen's memorial anthem two years earlier, and the piece as a whole was unpopular because it contained no arias for the theater. After the failure of the premiere, Handel revised the work and created a new version, cutting the first part and adding more arias. Hervé Nicquet, who will perform the work at the Berlioz Festival in France in 2021, also said that the two-part version, which was known to Berlioz and others in the 19th century, was the most popular version of the work. This two-part version, which was known to the 19th century, including Berlioz, was adopted, and the choice was followed in this recording.The recording was made at a time when the Corona disaster had passed its peak and it was easier to hold concerts again. Niquet says ...... that the joy of the people who had gained freedom under Moses' guidance overlapped with the sentiments of the musicians of the time, and the recording was made with a rare sense of unity. In fact, the centripetal force of the performance is exceptional, with the richly nuanced choral expression meshing beautifully with the deeply sculpted instrumental sound production, and the musical ups and downs are most interesting to listen to. This is a great performance that reminds us once again of the great chemistry between Niquet and Handel. Naxos Japan
