Gisela Curtolo, once concertmaster of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and now active with the Mozart Orchestra founded by Abbado and the Cristofori Ensemble, recorded Bach's unaccompanied works, a long-cherished dream. Born in Italy in 1969, Curtolo studied with Franco Gulli, Salvatore Accardo, and Mario Benvenuti. He has studied Bach's unaccompanied works for more than 40 years, but it was his winning of the Bach International Violin Competition in Leipzig in 2002 that awakened him to the importance of historical performance and the study of Baroque period literature, and since then he has been eagerly working on performances on period instruments. Since then, he has been eager to perform on period instruments. For this recording, he used an instrument made by David Tecchler in 1727 and a bow made by Nicolas Pierre Torte (Torte) between 1750 and 1760. Bach's articulations are strictly adhered to, while the repeats are aggressively embellished.At the same time, there is a beautiful sense of sound and song that seems to have been cultivated by the traditional, romantic Italian style of playing that Curtolo received in his youth, and combined with the unhurried tempo setting (the Chaconne takes just over 13 minutes), the performance is a masterpiece of moderate beauty.
