Bellina, an adopted daughter of a prominent Roman family, and Filandro, a young merchant, are in love with each other. However, Bellina's late foster father had stipulated in his will that, as a condition of inheritance, she must marry the rich Neapolitan Don Giampaolo. Don Giampaolo visits Rome, and the situation becomes complicated when Bellina's guardian, Don Romualdo, a self-proclaimed doctor of law, also has feelings for Bellina and plans to marry her if he can.
