The story is set in 18th-century Seville, Spain. Leonora, the daughter of the Marquis of Castrava, and Don Alvaro, who is of royal Inca descent, are secretly in love. Just as the two attempt to elope, they are caught by the Marquis. To show he was not resisting, Don Álvaro threw down his pistol, but it accidentally discharged, and the bullet unfortunately struck the Marquis. Leaving the Marquis—who died cursing his daughter—behind, the two flee. Driven by a thirst for revenge, Leonora’s brother, Don Carlo, pursues Don Alvaro. After a long journey, he encounters Don Alvaro on a battlefield in Italy, and the two form a strong bond of friendship, unaware of each other’s true identities. However, after saving Don Alvaro’s life when he was wounded in battle, Don Carlo discovers that Don Alvaro is the very man who killed his father, the Marquis, and seduced his sister… *La Forza del Destino* marks the transition from Verdi’s middle to late period. Although it premiered in St. Petersburg in 1862, the opera’s reputation was not particularly favorable due to its complex plot and excessively grim ending. Verdi subsequently made several revisions; in particular, the 1869 production at La Scala in Milan—which, following a major final revision, transformed the cataclysmic ending of the final act into one of religious salvation—was met with great acclaim. In June 2021, a new production of *La Forza del Destino* at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino garnered attention for its innovative staging by Carles Padriça, a founding member of the Catalan theater group La Frà dels Baus. The setting shifts from the distant past to 1759, where the story begins, to the near future (2222), and finally to the distant future (3333). It is a unique production in which the characters—as members of humanity at the mercy of an irresistible cosmic force (the power of fate)—participate in the story as time travelers. The three lead roles are played by Saioa Hernández, who sings with a rich, expressive voice; renowned tenor Roberto Aronica, and Amartuvshin Enkhbat—a Mongolian singer making his Florence debut with a powerful stage presence—as the three lead roles. Rounding out the stellar vocal cast are Annalisa Stoppa (as Preziosilla), and Ferruccio Furlanetto (as Father Guardiano), among others, creating a stellar vocal ensemble. Zubin Mehta leads the Florence Opera Orchestra and Chorus, delving deeply into the work’s inner essence while delivering a richly expressive musical performance that is a must-hear. Naxos Japan
