Nabucco" is based on the historical fact of the real-life Babylonian king Nabukodonozor (the historical Nebuchadnezzar II). It was Verdi's third production, performed at La Scala in Milan in 1842, and the composer's first success. Against the backdrop of a war between two opposing nations, this magnificent historical opera centers on the love-hate relationship between Fenena and Abigaille, two daughters of Nabucco, over their enemy, Ismaele of the Hebrew royal family. Stage director Arnaud Bernhardt has crafted a daring production that replaces the ancient biblical story with the period of the Italian unification movement and places a replica of La Scala, the epicenter of the popular uprising of 1848, at the center of Verona's grand stage.
