The first installment of our Mahler 150th Anniversary Celebration! Featuring Mitropoulos—a pioneer in Mahler interpretation—and the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra, performing Mahler’s “Tragic,” one of his most accomplished works! 2010 is also a commemorative year marking the 200th anniversaries of Chopin and Schumann’s births; the annual “La Folle Journée” festival features a Chopin program, and various Chopin and Schumann CDs have been released. However, while this year also marks the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth, the fact that it’s a “half-century” milestone—rather than a full century—may make it harder to generate the same level of excitement as for composers like Chopin. Nevertheless, since the 200th anniversary is still a long way off, 50 years from now, we have decided to take the liberty of releasing Mahler-related recordings as part of our own commemorative series. The first release in this series is Symphony No. 6, “Tragic,” performed by Mitropoulos and the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. With the exception of a few early works, all of Mahler’s compositions are deeply considered and highly polished. Among them, the “Tragic” is a masterpiece composed during a happy period in Mahler’s life and completed while he was in a state of profound spiritual fulfillment. The use of unique instruments—so characteristic of Mahler—and the dramatic structure, in which every element carries meaning, can only be described as magnificent. While there are many great performances and recordings of the “Tragic,” Mitropoulos—who, for some reason, is often associated in Japan with contemporary works—has crafted a truly magnificent interpretation of this piece. Decades before the Mahler boom even took hold in Japan, the fact that he was able to master this monumental work with such intensity and energy must have been nothing short of astonishing to Japanese audiences 50 years ago. This, too, is likely the result of his precise score-reading and genius-level memory. The orchestra also delivers a powerful performance! The combination of the two is nothing short of masterful.
