This album is licensed from ina& Radio France and was recorded by Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) in July 1981 at St. Luc's Church in Ménerbes, southern France. Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites Nos. 2, 4, and 5 were performed! The DG recording from 1960 is still very popular as one of the most famous recordings of this work, but Fournier had been facing this work all his life. The performance is a masterpiece of dignity. Every note is filled with soul, and the performance is as if Fournier is speaking to you. The Bach performance, filled with the spirit that only a live performance can bring, is both moving and dramatic. The church is quiet during the performance, but after the performance, the audience applauds endlessly, calling for a curtain call. It is as if you are listening to the performance in the concert hall.This is a delightful stereo recording of Fournier's masterful performance by Spectrum Sound, a highly acclaimed reissue of stringed instruments!
