Description:
Salzburg Cathedral has a long history, having been dedicated by Bishop St. Virgilius in 774 A.D., reconstructed in the late Romanesque style around 1200, and later rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1628. In 2016, Heinrich Ignatz Franz von Foerster performed at the cathedral. Ignatz Franz von Biber's "Mass for Salzburg Cathedral in 53 Voices" was performed at the cathedral in 2016. Biber was born in the Czech Republic, but spent his entire life as Salzburg's court music director. He brought the style of Italian music to Germany, which was still musically backward at the time, and developed it. Until recently, this Mass was thought to be the work of Orazio Benevoli, who premiered it when the cathedral was rebuilt in 1628, but recent research has identified it as Biber's work, first performed in 1682.The huge 53-part vocal breakdown consists of 16 choral voices, 35 orchestral voices, and two passages of organ and cello (viola da gamba), and is filled with the gorgeous sound of Biber's favorite trumpet, which is also used extensively in the piece. The "Collegium 1704" and "Collegium Vocale 1704" are Czech ensembles. The group was founded in 1991 by conductor and harpsichordist Václav Luks. Naxos Japan
