Description:

Video of the 2014 Lucerne Festival Opening Concert Nelsons Steps In as Abado’s Replacement Taking on an All-Brahms Program! The 2014 Lucerne Festival was the first edition without Abbado. Having consistently focused on Mahler, Abbado had planned to turn his attention to Brahms starting in 2014. Following Abbado’s passing, Andris Nelsons stepped in as his replacement. Nelsons appeared in a total of four performances: the opening concert featured in this video and two concerts with Pollini on August 23 and 24. Given that Nelsons had been intensively studying Brahms’s works in recent years, he was the perfect choice for the role. Nelsons is one of the busiest young conductors today, and during this period he was juggling multiple commitments, including conducting *Lohengrin* at the Bayreuth Festival and Britten’s *War Requiem* at the Proms. The program for the opening concert consisted entirely of works by Brahms, carrying over the repertoire originally scheduled to be conducted by Abbado. The concert began with Serenade No. 2. Comprising five movements, the work features a string ensemble consisting solely of violas, cellos, and double basses—without violins—so the gentle resonance of the woodwinds and the lower-register instruments is particularly striking. Nelsons’ gentle musicality worked very well in this performance. Next is the “Alto Rhapsody,” sung by Sarah Mingard, who enjoyed Abado’s deep trust. This work was written for alto solo, male chorus, and orchestra. The lyrics are from Goethe’s “Winter Journey to the Harz.” It is said to have been inspired by the marriage of Clara Schumann’s daughter, Julie. Mingard’s performance is utterly beautiful, showcasing the profound resonance of her voice. The main event is Symphony No. 2. Nelsons conducted Chopin with Pollini: On the 23rd and 24th, when he performed the Piano Concerto No. 1, he conducted Symphony No. 3 as the second half of the program; Nelsons’ Brahms, with its profound depth and rich romanticism, speaks lyrically and eloquently at a somewhat slower tempo. Furthermore, Nelsons’ dynamic conducting creates an overwhelming sense of exhilaration. It was a concert that showcased Nelsons’ excellent form in recent years. King International
