His original interpretation possesses a distinctive sense of climax, successfully highlighting Tchaikovsky’s descriptive power and presenting Tchaikovsky’s music with a rich, full-bodied color. Christoph Poppen is a violinist and conductor born in Münster, Germany, in 1956. As a violinist, he has won prizes at numerous prestigious competitions. In 1978, he founded the Cherubini String Quartet. In 1981, he won the Grand Prix at the Evian International String Quartet Competition. In 1988, he became music director of the Detmold Chamber Orchestra. In 1995, he was appointed music director of the Munich Chamber Orchestra. From 1988 to 1995, he served as a professor at the Detmold State University of Music, and since 1996, he has served as president of the Berlin State University of Music. He also performs on the Baroque violin, and his recording of “Bach/Morimour” with the Hilliard Ensemble, released by ECM, garnered worldwide attention. He has also made numerous appearances at the Salzburg Festival.
