Music of a Medieval Prophet: A Modern Interpretation Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179, Julian calendar), a 12th-century German mystic, was also the first female composer in history. Due to her multifaceted activities as the “Prophetess of the Rhine,” she is regarded as one of the most important women in medieval history. Over the course of her life, spanning more than 80 years, she left behind numerous writings and religious musical works, exerting a profound influence even on archbishops and popes. The works recorded here are the oldest known liturgical and moral plays by this composer. The creative interpretation ensemble “Ensemble Belcanto” is an all-female group. Founder Dietburk Spohr has stated, “We have abandoned the role of faithful reproducers of objective history and instead perform as if we were fictional medieval composers,” offering us, living in the modern age, a fresh and innovative interpretation.
