Grammy-nominated neo-soul singer NAO Her third album, *And Then Life Was Beautiful*, features an all-star lineup including Lianne La Havas, Lucky Day, and others NAO, a neo-soul singer who rose to prominence through guest appearances on tracks by Disclosure and Mura Masa, saw her second album *Saturn*, released in 2018, nominated for “Best Urban Contemporary Album” at the 62nd Grammy Awards and for “Best Album of the Year” at the Mercury Prize’s “Best Album of the Year” category. Having been actively releasing new songs from last year through this year, she is set to release her third studio album, *And Then Life Was Beautiful*, her first in about three years. The album features an all-star lineup of up-and-coming artists, including Lucky Day and Serpentwithfeet. It also includes “Woman feat. Lian La Havas,” which she reportedly recorded while carrying her daughter in a baby carrier, “Antidote,” an Afro-pop track featuring Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold, and “Messy Love,” a lead single with a guitar groove and drum rhythm reminiscent of ’90s R&B. Produced during the pandemic, the new album conveys a message of embracing both the good and bad sides of life, and is described as a work that reaches out to listeners when they face obstacles. Following the birth of her first child, the album also marks a new chapter for Naio. Naio had this to say about the album: “Life isn’t perfect—there are ups and downs, but it can also be beautiful. I think this album is honest and full of hope—it’s not glittery, it’s not all ‘This is awesome!’ vibes, and it’s not a party album. But it carries the message that no matter how hard or difficult things get, you can always get through them. That’s life. You just keep moving forward. But above all, I want to be able to see the beauty in life with a heart full of gratitude.” The lead single, “And Then Life Was Beautiful,” released in advance, is a mellow track that showcases Neio’s signature silky voice. In the performance video released at the same time, she sings alongside a six-member female chorus in a church setting. Toward the end, they perform an a cappella segment, and the delightful harmony between Neio and the chorus is truly outstanding.
