The Birth of a Legendary "Gold Star"!! The Sofs, a six-piece band from LA on the verge of breaking out, release their debut album on Rough Trade Records!! The Sofus, a six-piece band from Los Angeles, sent a demo to the prestigious label Rough Trade Records—which has previously launched The Smiths, The Strokes, and The Libertines, and more recently discovered Black Midi—and secured a contract despite never having played a single live show. Having made a splash worldwide—including here in Japan—since their 2025 debut, this truly one-of-a-kind "Goldstar" band is releasing their debut album, *GOLDSTAR*. The album’s title track, “GOLDSTAR,” is a ferocious, explosive song set against a Latin-infused sound, and a music video directed by collaborator Eric Daniels has also been released. Regarding this song, vocalist Ethan Ramon says, “‘GOLDSTAR’ is a song about the worst person you know screaming at God, ‘Give me proof that I’m a good person.’ In a deliberately lighthearted way, what I want to ask through this song and the entire album is, ‘Does trying to be a good person for the wrong reasons undermine that goodness?’” “Decadent bravado.” Ethan himself understands that what he’s singing about is “wrong,” but where should he release that impulse? “It’s sometimes important to write from the perspective of the worst part of yourself. Not to let that side of you live in your daily life, but to let it survive within the music.” It is him, and yet it isn’t him. He is venturing into places where many people are afraid to tread. The Sophs’ relentless honesty, intrusive thoughts, and genre-bending boldness immediately caught the attention of Jeff Travis and Janet Lee, founders of Rough Trade Records.
