Big Mess was created almost spontaneously during the isolation of 2020. This work began as a less explored experiment, combining an aggressive rock band with orchestral strings. Once I started writing," Elfman explains, "it was like opening Pandora's box, and I couldn't stop. None of it was planned. We had no idea how many songs we would write, but as soon as we started, it became a two-sided project with vastly contrasting and conflicting tones." The songs on Big Mess are both intricately harmonized arrangements and simple, vigorous compositions with a wit that sharply pokes at the chaos and confusion of the modern world. Says Elfman, "2020 was an intense year, to say the least." His words convey anger, frustration, and loneliness, but "Big Mess" is more than just a release of stress; Elfman achieves an artistic release on this album that he has missed for decades by confronting his emotions and creating space to write songs without restrictions, rediscovering his voice and reimagining himself in the process.Elfman does not hesitate to use his voice to convey his ideas." Songs like "Choose Your Side," "Serious Ground," and "Sorry" reflect the political climate of our time. Insects," a remake of a song by Oingo Boingo, is transformed into a meditation on the greed and sickness of the American ruling class. At the same time, however, Big Mess is a deeply personal work. Songs like the meditative "In Time," the haunting "We Belong," and the frenetic "Everybody Loves You" showcase Danny Elfman as he has never been heard at any stage of his remarkably diverse career. I knew from the beginning that this album was not going to be something that could be easily categorized," says Elfman. 'This was destined to be a crazy cacophony. That's just the way I am." The artwork for the album was created from 3D body scans by Sarah Sitkin, with design and art direction by Berit Gwendolyn Gilma.
