Performers include the Monteverdi Choir, the English Baroque Soloists, and the Orchestre Revolucionnelle et Romantique, the principal soldiers, the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Sir John Eliot Gardiner studied conducting in London and Paris (with Nadia Boulanger in Paris) before embarking on two paths simultaneously. He conducted orchestras such as the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the opera houses of London, Zurich, and Lyon, as well as working with his own ancient music ensembles. The Monteverdi Choir, which Gardiner founded in 1964, was especially central among them. And with this choir and the English Baroque Soloists, which he later formed in 1978, Gardiner made many pioneering recordings. He performed with many artists who were still at the beginning of their illustrious careers. Gardiner was always a consummate musician, and his desire to perform 19th century music on ancient instruments was inevitable, resulting in the founding of the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique in 1989. Its name alludes to the tradition established by French conductor François-Antoine Abneck. Gardiner's recordings in this set, especially of Bach, Beethoven, and Schumann, are landmark performances that will go down in history. Gardiner's recordings will continue to be enjoyed with full force in music making, with heartfelt expression and robust vitality. Universal Music/IMS
