Praised by Vant as Bruckner’s greatest masterpiece and cherished by die-hard Bruckner conductors such as Celibidache and Takashi Asahina, it has in recent years become one of the most popular of Bruckner’s symphonies, rivaling the Eighth in popularity. ■While this symphony is often perceived as one that only seasoned, veteran Bruckner conductors can perform masterfully, Paavo Järvi—who possesses intellect, emotion, and passion and is currently at the height of his career—unravels it from a fresh perspective. With a total running time of 69 minutes and 50 seconds, the tempo is quite brisk for this monumental work, which often runs in the 70-minute range.
