Savard's masterpiece revived in SACD Hybrid high quality sound! The latest release in the Heritage Series is Dowland's Lacrime! The latest release in the "Heritage Series" reissues Savard's masterpieces released on the Astre label (now naive label), which were once sadly discontinued. Following Diego Ortiz's "Resercata Collection" (AVSA9899), this time we are pleased to announce the return of Savall's 1987 recording of Dowland's "Lacrimée, or Seven Tears". At the time of its release, the recording was highly acclaimed for the overwhelming quality of the performances by Savard, Esperion XX, and other soloists. It was once out of print and has remained difficult to obtain, so this reissue is a joy for fans. This album has also undergone the Heritage Series' customary multichannel remastering, allowing you to enjoy Astre's excellent recording in SACDHybrid high sound quality. This is a must-hear disc, especially for those who have heard this recording in the past, as well as for those who have recently begun to listen to Savard's performances. Dowland's "Lacryme, or Seven Tears" is a collection of short pieces consisting of seven beautiful "lacrymes" with Dowland's typical melancholy. Dowland was one of the leading lute songwriters of his time, and his works were well known to many people, especially "Flow, My Tears," which was a hit song that took the world by storm. While other composers arranged the song, Dowland himself included "Lacryme, or Seven Tears," a consort based on the song, in a collection of instrumental arrangements published in 1604.Known as the "Pavane de la tear" (Pavane of Tears), this work is composed for five viols and a lute, and is characterized by a low center of gravity and calm harmonies throughout. In order to avoid a gloomy atmosphere, Savall intersperses dances from the same collection of instrumental arrangements between the seven heavy "Lacrimées," creating a program with an overall sense of light and dark. The performances of Christophe Cowan, Jose Miguel Moreno, and other virtuosos are also noteworthy. The superb ensemble, which has not faded away yet, is sure to attract your attention.
