The Complete Collection of Viktor Ullmann’s Vital Piano Works, Lost at Auschwitz Viktor Ullmann was a Czech-Jewish composer who was labeled by the Nazis as a composer of “degenerate music” and murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. During his 46-year life, he composed seven piano sonatas. Sonatas Nos. 1 through 4 were composed in Prague, while Nos. 5 through 7 were composed in the concentration camp. Having studied composition under Schoenberg, Ullmann’s style is atonal and expressionistic. The first sonata, composed in 1936, features a funeral march in its second movement titled “In Memory of Gustav Mahler.” It is also fascinating to note that the second movement of the Piano Sonata No. 3, composed in 1940, consists of seven variations and a fugue based on Mozart’s “Allegro, K. 3,” which Mozart composed at the age of six. Despite his tragic life, his music is brimming with vitality. Christophe Sirodot, who gained attention for releasing the complete piano sonatas of Feinberg on the BIS label, is also a scholar of Ullmann and brings these works to life with his deep understanding and interpretation.
