Thomas Bowes, one of Britain’s leading violinists, made a name for himself as a founding member of the “Maggini String Quartet” and has served as guest concertmaster with ensembles such as the London Mozart Players. This album combines Elgar’s Violin Concerto—a work he has cherished for many years—with five short pieces: “Salut d’Amour,” “Song of the Morning,” “Song of the Night,” “Capricious Woman,” and “Sigh,” all arranged for orchestra in a new arrangement. The deep lyricism and grand structural sense of the concerto resonate with the delicate charm of these intimate miniatures, bringing Elgar’s world of “love” and “recollection” to life in a multifaceted way. The orchestral arrangements by his long-time partner, Eleanor Alberga, are also a highlight. The recording took place at Abbey Road Studio 1, which Elgar himself opened in 1931 and where he recorded the same concerto with the young Menuhin the following year. Performed by Sinfonia Arcadiana—composed of London’s top session musicians who have long collaborated on film scores—and conducted by Nick Farrowfield, this performance is brought to life with great momentum and rich, expressive melody.
