Drawn from the celebrated complete Schubert quartet cycle that won the Grand Prix du Disque and Belgium's Prix Caecilia - the principal works distilled onto two discs. Newly remastered from the original German masters. The Melos Quartett was founded in 1965 by principal players of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra: Wilhelm Melcher (1940-2005), first violin, Gerhard Voss (b. 1939), second violin, Hermann Voss (b. 1934), viola, and Peter Buck (b. 1937), cello. Melcher studied with Erich Röhn and Pina Carmirelli, the Voss brothers with Sándor Végh, and Buck with Ludwig Hoelscher. The name "Melos" combines the "Mel" of Melcher with the "os" of Voss, playing on the Latin melos, meaning "song" or "melody". With an average age of just 28, the players won high praise from the outset. In 1967 they signed a recording contract with Intercord, releasing a complete Beethoven quartet cycle for the bicentenary of the composer's birth in 1970. In 1969 they signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, making a great many recordings over twenty years and beginning in 1970 with Bartók, Kodály and Weiner. They toured the Soviet Union, the United States and South Africa in the early 1970s, and in 1978 undertook a Far East tour that included Japan and Australia. The Schubert recordings reissued here date from 1974-75. From the complete cycle that won the Grand Prix du Disque and the Belgian Prix Caecilia (imported edition, DG 4631512), this two-disc set gathers No. 12, the Quartettsatz, No. 13 "Rosamunde", No. 14 "Death and the Maiden" and No. 15, together with the other, earlier quartet fragment in C minor. These are analogue stereo recordings from the quartet's fullest maturity, and remastering has restored a fresh, clean sound. The playing is orthodox in the best sense, with transparent yet deep sonority and flowing ensemble; the "Rosamunde" in particular is outstanding in both performance and sound. Sourced from the original German analogue master tapes, newly transferred at 192kHz/24bit and remastered for this release. The booklet includes alternative cover designs in colour, and the notes feature a newly written introductory essay. Five Melos Quartett reissues are being released in this series.
