A collection of French piano concertos by the French Piano School! For nearly 150 years, France has nurtured a unique pianism centered on teaching at the Paris Conservatory. APR's "French Piano School" series delves into a number of rare recordings made during the first 50 years of the 20th century, the heyday of the school. The latest release brings together recordings by 12 pianists from the French Piano School and features 13 French works for piano and orchestra. With the exception of Saint-Saens' Second and Ravel's two concertos, ten of the pieces were world premiere recordings at the time, four were solo performances by the composers themselves, and most of the other performers were pianists who knew the composers well and had worked with them, making the French Piano School a very distinctive and individualistic group of musicians. These are the definitive recordings of these repertoire, recorded at a time when the French piano school had a very distinctive character. In particular, you can look forward to new remasterings of such valuable recordings as Saint-Saens' "Egyptian Style" by Yasukawa Kazuko (then Kusama Kazuko) under the direction of Otaka Naotada, Saint-Saens by Alfred Cortot, and his own compositions by Poulenc and Francais.
