[Neoclassicism: Simone Meneses and the Vienna Orchestra] Three neoclassical works performed by Brazilian-born Simone Menezes and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Prokofiev’s masterpiece, written in 1917 based on the concept of “what if Haydn had lived in the 20th century,” is infused with irony and playfulness. Composed around the same time, Villa-Lobos’s work freely expresses a homage to the spirit of Mozart—rather than structural imitation—employing textures inspired by Bach. In 1947, Poulenc composed this work using the techniques of mature neoclassicism, featuring musical themes based on diverse ideas that shift rapidly and with high contrast. This album lets you enjoy reinterpretations of Classicism by composers from diverse countries—including 20th-century Russia, Brazil, and France—presented with the traditional sound of the Vienna orchestra, which was at the heart of the Classical period epitomized by Haydn and Mozart.
